RIDGECREST, Calif. April 18, 2012 – This week, the U.S. Bureau of Land Management (BLM) received comments from over 4,100 members of the public opposing the planned roundup of burros from the historic Piute Mountain Herd Area (HA) in the eastern Mojave Desert. The emails, sent to the BLM’s Ridgecrest Field Office, also urged the BLM to forgo removal of “nuisance” burros from the Chocolate Mule Mountains HA, urging the agency instead to relocate any burros found on private lands to the public lands in this vast southern California desert area.
The American Wild Horse Preservation Campaign (AWHPC), a coalition of more than 45 organizations is urging the BLM to implement available alternatives to the proposed roundup in order to leave wild burros on the range where they belong.

Wow, did the exhibitors ever luck out with the weather at this years spring Gold N Grand! With rain threatening the whole weekend the schedule was planned for everyone to have a covered place to show, well, except the trail people! However, it never actually rained during the day. Trail was pretty muddy on Sunday, but everyone managed well. The reining pens were a little crowded since they had to cut down the arenas to make a small warm up area for them. Friday, the weather was beautiful, and Saturday was cold. English classes were only about 2 hours long, and everything else used most of the day. Most of the classes I saw were well attended, and there were plenty of vendors for shopping! Results have not been posted as of yet, but the awards were beautiful. Saddles for weekend high points, buckles to top five weekend circuit winners, and embroidered halters for AQHA weekend circuit winners. The photographer for the show was Shane Rux. Elseana Skowronski is one busy teen. As a high school freshman, she takes dance lessons in Oakhurst and serves as a teen leader in Mariposa’s 4-H program. She was a junior leader for two years previously. She owns two horses and rides and shows two leased horses.
If you haven’t heard yet about the Youth Horse Fair coming up next weekend, Skowronski is organizing and facilitating the event for her 4-H Emerald Star project. She’s lined up an impressive group of guest speakers, including a veterinarian, a farrier and a Shetland pony owner and exhibitor. Jocelynn Barrington, Miss Mariposa County Fair Rodeo Queen, will be master of ceremonies.
Wow! What a turn out for the last tack swap at Loomis Basin Equestrian Center. This yearly sale we surely be missed. There were about the same amount of vendors as usual, but the booths were filled to the brim with stuff! When the sale opened, crowds of people swarmed the aisles. The sellers did not get a break from the action for at least an hour and a half. The good news? People were buying stuff! Many looked to be preparing for the upcoming show season, and we saw several kids getting outfitted with complete sets of tack and clothes. This is a truly amazing tale that involves a woman, a horse, and a group of dedicated rescuers on a beach in Australia.
A woman was out for an afternoon ride with her daughter when her horse suddenly sunk neck deep into the thick mud of Avalon Beach in Geelong, Victoria. What followed, reports Newspix, was a grueling three-hour rescue caught in photos. As Nicole Graham held the head of 18-year-old Astro from drowning in the rising tide, members of the fire department, emergency services, and a vet attempted to free the 1,100-pound horse. First they tried using fire hoses, then a winch. Making little progress, the vet, Stacey Sullivan, sedated him so that he could be pulled out with a tractor.

Last month SacHorse.com traveled to the famous Red Bluff Bull & Gelding Sale at the Tehama County Fairgrounds in Red Bluff, CA. Â The Bull & Gelding Sale has lots to see. Â For the equine enthusiasts there are multiple events in which horses and mules are worked as they are in preparation for the Gelding sale including shown at the halter, roping, and ranch exercises. Â For the ag enthusiasts there is the whole world of beef production on display plus the workings of that vital ranch tool, the working cow dog. Â Throw in a trade show, art show, bull riding and the “Sale” is not to be missed.
