Two die in horse trailer from carbon monoxide

September 20, 2011 by Mark Thompson Leave a Comment

Richard Leroy Kovacs, 56, and Jordan Kovacs, 14, had been barbecuing in a horse trailer at the Clements Stampede Rodeo grounds when they breathed deadly amounts of the poisonous gas, said Deputy Les Garcia, spokesperson for the San Joaquin Sheriff’s Department.

There is no official time of death for the two because emergency workers believe it could’ve taken place the day before, said Dave Ingrum, chief of the Clements Rural County Fire Protection District.

Great Old Article About Tevis Cup

The Cup At The End Of The Mountain Trail

The horses and their improbable riders gathered at Tahoe City, Calif. for the yearly Tevis Cup race across the winding paths and hazardous streams of the Sierra to Auburn, 100 miles away

What the Boston Marathon is to the distance runner, the Western States 100-mile, one-day ride for the Tevis Cup is to the endurance horseman. And, like the marathon, the California race over the rugged Sierra from Tahoe City to Auburn attracts some improbable but wonderful people. Among the 92 riders who started this year, there were a couple on their honeymoon, a 12-year-old girl, a 72-year-old man who had put off a hernia operation in order to compete, an Indian ranch hand, some polo players, a woman believed to be a Cherokee princess, an assortment of mothers, secretaries, factory workers and businessmen and a man with a gray vandyke beard who was described as a retired capitalist.

Trail Riding Manners

August 28, 2011 by Mark Thompson Leave a Comment

Trail riding should be fun and relaxing, but every rider should follow some basic etiquette while on the trail and sharing it with others.

Riding in a single file line is usually safest with a group of riders. It is wise to keep about a horse length in between horses, especially when riding with horses you do not know.

Always pass another horse with plenty of room and in a controlled manner. Crashing through the bushes to pass another horse is just asking to put the other horse and rider in an unsafe position.

Do not hold branches as you pass and let them snap back in the face of the horse or rider behind you. Gently push them as you go by and warn the rider behind you there are branches.

Do not snap off branches that are in the way without warning the rest of the riders. The noise could spook the other horses.

Horseback riders typically have the right of way on multi-use trails. However, be courteous of all other trail users, but do not be afraid to speak up. Many bicycle riders and joggers use head phones and can not hear you or your horse.

Always make sure to okay any change of speed with the rest of the group. Trotting or loping off without warning can put other riders in danger.
