Save time! Automatic Water Valves

January 24, 2014 by Mark Thompson Leave a Comment

Welcome to the first installment of Resourceful Horseman. This will be a regular series or articles aimed at saving a little time and money around horses.

Auto Waterers

If your set up allows then I highly recommend putting automatic water systems on your troughs. For under $20 ( I paid $10 for the plastic one from TSC) you have one less chore to worry about and no accidently leaving the hose running and flooding everything. (I have only done that a handful of times.) Most valves can just be attached with the included hardware to almost any bucket or trough, but it should be something that won’t be accidently yanked on, as to not break a water pipe or the hose running to it. Also, if your horse tends to chew and play with stuff, you might need to build some protection over the valve. Some wire fencing or wood will help from having the valve ripped off the side of the trough. Con: You can’t monitor your horse’s intake of water. If you have a horse prone to not drinking enough you might stick to the ol’ hose and bucket method.

Draft Horse Classic Runs Through The Weekend

September 20, 2013 by Mark Thompson Leave a Comment

Fall is in the air and that means that it’s time for the annual Draft Horse Classic at the Nevada County Fairgrounds in Grass Valley.  This is the 27th year of the Classic in Nevada City featuring beautiful and strong draft horses, including Clydesdales, Percherons, Shires, and Belgians, parading in a number of different classes and challenges.  From the Fairgrounds:

“The Classic spotlights a variety of horses, teams, rigs and performances; featuring everything from farm wagons, carriages, and driving competitions to dancing horses and racing mules.  The stars of the show are the horses, and with more than 120 horses stables on the grounds, the Classic offers a unique chance to observe them in a multitude of settings.”

During the performance, Tommie Turvey, world-renowned equine entertainer will also perform.  You can catch Tommie’s horses in Batman: The Dark Knight and his training was featured in Budweiser’s 2013 Superbowl Commercial.

The Fairground’s Harvest Festival will also accompany the Classic again this year.  The Harvest Festival features many different vendors and food booths, art and artisans, and demonstrations from craftsmen such as farriers. The Harvest Festival, which also encompasses behind the scenes action at the Draft Horse Classic through barn tours, is an opportunity to get an intimate look at these large horse breeds, their tack, driving and pulling equipment, and meet and talk to the owners and trainers.

On Saturday, Bounty of the County will take place which is a pairing of local chefs with local produce and meats of Nevada producers (for more info, please visit www.nevadagcountygrown.org). Sunday will feature the third annual Classic BBQ Cook-Off from 1:30 to 4.  SacHorse.com didn’t make it to the Cook-Off last year, but two years ago food was going fast so be sure to get there early.

The Classic began last night with one performance.  There will be a performance this evening at 6:30 p.m.  The remainder of the weekend’s performances are listed below.

Saturday, September 22 10:00 am
Saturday, September 22 6:30 pm
Sunday, September 23 10:00 am
Sunday, September 23 4:00 pm

Tickets range from $10 to $19 and a season pass is available for $80.  For more information please visit the fair’s website by clicking here or call them at (530) 273-6217.

Loomis Basin Equine Med Center Grand Opening

July 4, 2013 by Mark Thompson Leave a Comment

It was a great, but hot event! Many booths from local equine related organizations and businesses. There were educational talks throughout the day from Loomis Basin vets. Sachorse.com did a tour with Dr. Diana Stolba and got to see the wonderful new facility. We were even treated to a burger and hot dog lunch! Thanks to Loomis Basin for a great event. Sachorse.com had a drawing for two western saddle blankets and the winners will be announced soon. Check back here or our Facebook page to see who won.

Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center To Host Grand Opening and Horse Fair Sunday, June 30th

June 28, 2013 by Mark Thompson Leave a Comment

Loomis Basin is moving into bigger digs.  Formerly located in Loomis, the new location in Penryn will double the capacity of the Center to treat large animals, increasing it to 40 horses, cows, llamas, or alpacas, among others, at any one time.  In addition, two barns and more land will allow for increased boarding of animals and rehabilitation services.  Loomis Basin plans to add an additional three veterinarians on staff as well.

To celebrate their new location, the Center will be hosting a Grand Opening and Horse Fair on June 30th.  The festivities will occur from 9 am to 2 pm and will feature a series of informative mini-seminars on equine health.  Topics include a podiatry demo, MRI procedure, the equine heart, breeding basics, and the equine eye among others.  There will also be informational booths from local vendors (including SacHorse.com!) and lunch will be available.

Loomis Basin has been open since 1975 as a veterinary clinic serving both farm and companion animals.  The large animal clinic was established in 1991 as an independent practice with the equine hospital opening in 2004.  The practice was officially renamed Loomis Basin Equine Medical Center in 2005.  It is the only facility of its kind, offering hospitalization, surgery and intensive care for horses, between San Francisco and Reno with the exception of the facilities at the U.C. Davis School of Veterinary Medicine.

The new Center is located at 2973 Penryn Road, Penryn, CA.  Off of Highway 80, take Penryn Road heading North.  The Clinic will be located on your right hand side.  A map of the location is provided below.

For more information, please visit  www.lbemc.com or call (916) 652-7645.
