Kids teach wild mustangs to respond to human touch in Placer County

As Rose Ellis, 14, gently pulled the sparkly purple hula hoop to the side, Nike, her yearling mustang, responded flawlessly, moving away from the pressure and turning her body.

The hula hoop technique begins to teach the horse, who just two weeks ago had hardly been touched by humans, to respond to the contact of reins, explained Gena Wasley, who is helping Ellis train Nike.

The two said it’s still very early in the process, but the progress so far has been remarkable.

“When we first got her, she was afraid to be touched. She was scared out of her mind,” Ellis said.

Nevada mustang shooters forfeit trapping licenses

RENO, Nev. — Two Nevada men who spent six months in prison for killing federally protected mustangs avoided additional prison time as part of a plea deal reached with U.S. prosecutors on Wednesday after they broke a state trapping law.

Todd Davis, 46, and Joshua Keathley, 38, agreed to forfeit their hunting, fishing and trapping licenses for two years in Nevada and all other U.S. states under the plea bargain arrangement U.S. Magistrate Robert McQuaid Jr. approved Wednesday in Reno.

EPA: Fertility Control Vaccine Approved for U.S. Wild Horses

The Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has officially registered the first contraceptive vaccine for horses after more than two decades of trial and study. The registration was sponsored by the Humane Society of the United States (HSUS).

“This welcome announcement marks a watershed in the humane management of wild animals,” said Wayne Pacelle, president and CEO of The HSUS. “This is a win-win-win-good for horses, good for wildlands management, and good for taxpayers. Expanding the use of this proven contraceptive should lead to a significant reduction in wild horse gathering, relocation, and … pasturing in long term holding facilities.”
