Anne Reynolds Wins Seventh Snaffle Bit Futurity Non Pro Championship on Smart Magic Trick

October 1, 2011 by Mark Thompson Leave a Comment

Anne Reynolds won her very first National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity Championship in 1998 on Magical Lena. Thirteen years and five Futurity Championships later, Reynolds claimed her record seventh Snaffle Bit Futurity title on Smart Magic Trick, out of Magical Lena. Magical Lena also produced Very Smart Magic – another Futurity champion.

Reynolds won $17,480, an original CR Morrison bronze sponsored by Farnam Horse Products, a Bob’s Custom Saddle sponsored by Holy Cow Performance Horses, a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Jon and Jody Semper, a 100x hat from Shortys Hattery, an ESP pad from Classic Equine, Platinum Performance, a Cinch vest from Bob’s Custom Saddles, and a CR Morrison trophy and commemorative medallion.

Reynolds and Smart Magic Trick began the finals with a 212.5 in the herd work. “That first set of cattle were kind of hard to drive out. She wanted to be good. I had a miss on the second cow, but I cut the third cow with 30 seconds left. I thought it was going to be bad but it was really good. I was happy about that,” the King Hill, Idaho, Non Pro explained.

Reynolds and “Stacy” came back strong with a 217.5 in the rein work, and finished with a 210 in the fence work. “I was pleased in the reining. She had a super run. We had an underspin, but she was really showable and great.” She added, “She wanted to be good down the fence, but then when the cow started to make its first turn it changed its mind and snuck under her neck. We were able to hold on to the lead though.”

The top side of Stacy’s pedigree is equally impressive. She’s by Reynold’s stallion Very Smart Remedy, who also produced her 2010 and 2011 Futurity Champions.

Eric Freitas and One Time Nic were the Non Pro Futurity Reserve Champions with a score of 636. Freitas, of Santa Maria, California, won $13,110, a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Dominic Conicelli, Platinum Performance, a Cinch vest from Bob’s Custom Saddles, and a CR Morrison commemorative medallion.

One Time Nic is by One Time Pepto out of Lady Reminic.

Jens Naglestad Wins NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity Amateur Championship on Itchi Mint

September 27, 2011 by Mark Thompson Leave a Comment

Jens Naglestad traveled over 1,600 miles to compete in his very first National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity. When he heads back home to Whitesboro, Texas, his trailer will be a bit fuller. That’s because on Monday, September 26, Naglestad piloted his horse Itchi Mint to a 214.5 in the cow work, clinching the Amateur division title by three points!

For the win, Naglestad received a check for $4,440, a Bob’s Custom Saddle sponsored by Larry and Ellen Bell, a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Circle Y Ranch, a 100X hat from Shorty’s Hattery, an ESP pad from Classic Equine, a Farnam Horse Products gift basket, Platinum Performance, a Cinch vest from Bob’s Custom Saddles, and a CR Morrison trophy and commemorative medallion.

“It’s my first Snaffle Bit Futurity. It is pretty amazing to win here – I don’t think it’s sunk in yet!” he said following the awards ceremony. “I thank my wife Lori, Frank Kenzy from South Dakota, Jamie Olsen from Nebraska, and Chris Dawson. Without all them I wouldn’t have been able to do any of this.”

Naglestad and “Itchy” started off with a 211 in the herd work, and followed that with a 209.5 in the rein work. “The herd work is one of my worst events, but Chris and I have been working on it a lot. I could have been a little better, but my horse was good. In the rein work, he was right there,” he said.

During the cow work, Naglestad’s cheering section could be heard from outside the arena. “I could hear them a few times. I’ve had a rough time in the cow work, but it went well today. My horse is good – a lot better than I am,” he said modestly of Itchy, by Cat Ichi out of Spoonful Of Mint.

Amanda Gardiner and Stephen Silva tied for the Reserve Championship with scores of 632. Each took home a check for $3,330. They will each receive a Gist Silversmiths buckle sponsored by Barbara Hastings and Crawford Performance Horses, Cinch vests from Bob’s Custom Saddles, Platinum Performance, and CR Morrison commemorative medallions.

Roxanne Peters Wins Non Pro Limited and $5K Non Pro Limited at NRCHA Snaffle Bit Futurity

September 24, 2011 by Mark Thompson Leave a Comment

Winning one class at the National Reined Cow Horse Association Snaffle Bit Futurity in Reno, Nevada, is an accomplishment. But Roxanne Peters made her debut on Friday, September 23, and won two!

Peters and Make Mine Grey marked a 289.5 to win both the Non Pro Limited and $5K Non Pro Limited. She won $2,338, and took home two Bob’s Custom Saddles from the NRCHA and the Santa Ynez Valley Cow Horse Association, two Gist Silversmiths buckles from the NRCHA and Ramona Koch Training Stables, two Cinch vests from Bob’s Custom Saddles, Platinum Performance, two CR Morrison trophies and two CR Morrison commemorative medallions.

“He just felt good from the minute I got here. Went out to the practice pen and just jogged, then worked the sack. He’s a little lazy normally but he just felt honest today – like he’s been all year,” she said.

As a reining horse breeder, Peters hasn’t had much of an opportunity to do much showing herself. But when a friend told her to buy Make Mine Gray, she didn’t hesitate. “I thank Lori Bricker for making me buy him. I then had to figure out what I could sell so that I could get him,” she explained, laughing. “He’s actually a Snaffle Bit Futurity Sale graduate. I also thank Dan Roeser for finding him and putting him in the sale back then.”

For Peters, competing in Reno during the Snaffle Bit Futurity is a dream come true. “I’ve been coming here for years in another context – but this is my first time to actually compete here.” She added, “It was really special because my parents and a good friend flew in to watch me compete, and I had so many other great friends here.”

The Auburn, Washington, Non Pro had many people to thank – and at the top of the list was trainer Dean McCann. “I owe it all to Dean. He’s a great Non Pro coach,” she said. “I also thank Donn Leson – he’s done all my equipment and been with me from the beginning – and everyone in the Northwest Reined Cow Horse Association. It’s a very tight group and we all support each other.”

LeAnn Bayles and Diamonds Are Smokin and Jamie Foster and Fletch Me If You Can tied for the $5K Non Pro Limited Reserve Championship with scores of 288.5. Both took home checks for $828. Diamonds Are Smokin is by Like A Diamond out of Shirley Smoke.

Foster and Fletch Me If You Can, by Royal Fletch out of Sug Sug Could, also won the Non Pro Limited Reserve Championship, worth an additional $902.
